Updating to ASIP 6.0
This section will discuss special considerations when updating
from previous versions of AppleShare file server software or from
Personal File Sharing (built into the Mac OS). Upgrading from
Appleshare 2.x is not supported.
[Advanced]
Updating to ASIP from Personal File Sharing
When updating from a Mac which was running personal file sharing,
you only need to install over existing software. The Users & Groups
data file and privileges which you had created using Mac OS file
sharing will be retained. Because the Users & Groups data file
is modified such that it will no longer be usable with Personal
File sharing, a backup of the file is created, which would allow
you to return to using Personal File sharing if you wished.
Before updating, be sure that you have met the minimum system
configurations, and review the pre-installation tips.
Updating from previous versions of ASIP 5.x
Follow these general guidelines:
- Make sure that server's RAM meets minimum requirementss for ASIP
6.0
- Update the MacOS on the server machine as needed.
- Have mail users file/save/delete their mail messages as needed
(a new mail database will be created for use with the new version
of ASIP). An alternative is to use the ASIP IP Mail Tool to update
the mail database. See the Related Topic for more information.
- Install ASIP 6.0
When updating from a version of ASIP 5.x, the following server
information is retained:
- all user & group information
- serial number
- share points and access privileges
Print server queue will not be retained, they must be reconfigured.
Updating from AppleShare 4.x
When updating from version 4.x of AppleShare, you may possibly
have to update the server hardware as well, if it does not meet
the minimum system requirements. If this is the case, follow the
instructions for updating Server software and hardware, below. Otherwise, you would follow these general guidelines:
- Verify that server's RAM meets minimum requirementss for ASIP 6.0
- Update the Mac OS on the server machine as needed.
- Configure TCP/IP control panel if you wish to use IP services.
- Install ASIP 6.0
When updating from version 4.x, the following server information
is retained:
- all user & group information
- serial number
- share points and access privileges
Print server queues will not be retained, they must be reconfigured.
Updating from AppleShare 3.x
When updating from AppleShare 3.x, both server hardware and software
must be updated. Follow the instructions for Updating Both Server
Software & Hardware, below.
Updating Both Server Software & Server Hardware
When updating both server software and moving services to another
computer (updating server hardware), there are two goals:
- to bring over the Users & Groups from the old server so that you
don't need to re-enter them, and
- to bring over the shared data, including access privileges, so
that you don't need to re-establish them.
Here are the guidelines for moving the U&G data file and the shared
data to another machine:
- Set up new server
- Installing MacOS 8.1, if needed
- Configure Date & Time, AppleTalk & TCP/IP control panels
- Set up Owner name, password, and Macintosh name in File Sharing
control panel. These do not need to be the same as on the old
server.
- Install ASIP 6.0, & restart.
- Transfer Users & Groups
- At the old server, copy the Users & Groups data file from the
System Folder:Preferences to a floppy (or across the network,
so that it can be accessible to the new server).
- At the new server:
- Drag the existing Users & Groups data file from the System folder:Preferences
folder to the desktop.
- Drag the copy of the Users & Groups file from the old server to
System Folder:Preferences on the new server.
- Restart the new server--don't forget this step!
- Proceed with ASIP Easy Setup.
- After setting up the services, open Web & File admin program,
and verify that users & groups have successfully been brought
to the new server.
- Transfer Shared Data
- Use a backup utility, such as Retrospect, which will back up both
the data and the access privileges. Then restore the data to the
new server. Note that AppleShare must be running during both the
backup and restore process, and the Users & Groups data file must
be the same for privileges to be properly restored.
- If you do not have such a backup utility, here are alternate methods:
- If the shared data is on an external hard drive:
- Shut down the old server and the new server
- Connect the external hard drive to the new server (make sure you've
already transferred Users & Groups by this point).
- Turn on external hard drive and boot new server
- Launch Web & File Services, and verify that external hard drive
has privileges intact.
- If desired, use the "Duplicate Folder" command to copy share points
from the external drive to an internal drive.
- If the shared data is on an internal hard drive, you have several
options:
- Install the internal drive in the new server, or
- Use Server Admin's "Copy Volume" or "Duplicate Folder" (depending
on version you're using) command to move the data from an internal
to a spare external drive, then follow instructions above for
moving data on an external drive.
- Note that "Duplicate Folder" and "Copy Volume" commands only work
on local disks. You cannot use these commands to copy data to
a shared volume mounted on the server's desktop.
